CLEVELAND, Ohio — In the wake of the Browns’ abrupt exit in the wild card round and with Deshaun Watson coming back in 2024 from his fractured shoulder, Kevin Stefanski is shaking up his offensive staff.

Running backs coach Stump Mitchell has been fired, and tight ends coach T.C. McCartney will also not be retained, a league source told cleveland.com.

UPDATE: Alex Van Pelt out as Browns offensive coordinator according to report

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, who has been fine with Stefanski calling the plays, is still under contract, but is under evaluation with the rest of the offensive staff. Anderson reports he was also told he’s been let go, and a source told cleveland.com that could be the possible outcome.

The Browns are seeking fresh ideas on offense, a source said.

Stefanski, a leading candidate for NFL Coach of the Year, led the Browns to an 11-6 record and a wild card berth in the playoffs despite using a club record four different starting quarterbacks and being down to his fourth and fifth offensive tackles.

With Watson recovering from surgery to repair a broken glenoid bone in his right throwing shoulder, Joe Flacco led the Browns on a 4-1 improbable ride to their

The three assistants have been with Stefanski since he took the Browns job 2020.

The Browns finished 16th overall on offense, 12th in rushing, and 19th in passing.

While the Browns lost 45-14 to the Texans in the wild card round, up-and-coming NFL offensive coordinators such as the Texans’ Bobby Slowik and the Bucs’ Dave Canales advanced to the wild card round with explosive offensive performances.

In the wild card loss, the Browns averaged only 2.8 yards per carry, including 1.9 yards by lead running back Jerome Ford.

The Browns lost Nick Chubb in Week 2 to a season-ending knee injury, and went with a running-back-by-committee consisting of Ford, Kareem Hunt and Pierre Strong Jr. thereafter. The Browns hope to get Chubb back by next season, and Hunt is a free agent who will test the waters.

The Browns and McCartney are parting ways despite tight end David Njoku having a career season, with a team-high 81 receptions, 882 yards (No. 2) and a team-high six TDs.

Under Van Pelt’s guidance, Flacco went 4-1 to help the Browns clinch their third playoff berth since 1999. Along the way, he threw for 300 yards in a club record four straight games, and tacked on another in Houston. But the Browns led the NFL with 37 giveaways, including eight regular-season interceptions by Flacco, and two pick-sixes in the wild card game that sealed their fate.
