At the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Adam Hadwin made headlines for an unexpected reasonโ€”he was tackled by a security guard just after fellow Canadian Nick Taylor sank a dramatic 72-foot eagle putt to win the tournament.

Returning to this yearโ€™s Canadian Open, Hadwin was eager to move past the infamous incident that still resonates with fans. The Moose Jaw native put in a solid performance in 2023, tying for 11th at Oakdale Golf and Country Club alongside Harry Higgs, Jonathan Byrd, Harrison Endycott, and Doug Ghim.

When his good friend and compatriot Nick Taylor ended a 69-year winless streak for Canadians at the event with an incredible eagle in a playoff on the 18th holeโ€”dashing Tommy Fleetwoodโ€™s shot at his first PGA Tour titleโ€”Hadwin rushed to celebrate. However, his attempt to join the jubilation took a turn when a security guard, not realizing who he was, tackled him just after he sprayed champagne on Taylor. The incident quickly went viral online.

Taylorโ€™s caddie, Dave Markle, was visibly shocked and shouted in recognition of Hadwin amid the confusion. Reflecting on the bizarre moment, Hadwin said: โ€œNickโ€™s win was incredible. I didnโ€™t want to be part of what happened after, but reading peopleโ€™s reactions has been pretty fun.โ€

He admitted he blacked out briefly during the adrenaline-fueled chaos: โ€œI honestly donโ€™t remember it. For 15-20 seconds, I had no idea what was going on. Iโ€™m just glad it all turned out okayโ€”we can laugh about it now. It was a simple misunderstanding.โ€

Hadwin wasnโ€™t seriously hurt and chose to embrace the humor of the situation, even using a photo of the tackle as his profile and header on X (formerly Twitter), captioning it with, โ€œPut in the Louvre.โ€

The security guard involved also shared his side in an anonymous interview with TSN. He explained that from his position behind Taylor and his caddie, he saw someoneโ€”Hadwinโ€”approaching quickly with a bottle and no visible credentials. Believing it to be a potential threat, he reacted instinctively.

He described it as a โ€œsoft takedown,โ€ noting that Hadwinโ€™s feet stayed on the ground, and said it was Markle who explained the misunderstanding. โ€œBryan Crawford, the tournament director, came over, and we all sorted it out quickly. We got up, laughed, apologized, and that was it,โ€ the guard recalled.
