BREAKING NEWS: Former NRL Star Trent Merrin Charged in $140,000 Cryptocurrency Fraud Case
Sydney, Australia — Former NRL forward Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged $140,000 cryptocurrency theft, New South Wales police confirmed this week.
According to reports from news.com.au, police raided Merrin’s Barrack Point home on the NSW South Coast, seizing electronic devices believed to be linked to the alleged transactions. Investigators claim Merrin accessed the crypto account of a 29-year-old man and transferred approximately AUD $140,000 without authorization.
The 36-year-old, who retired from professional rugby league in 2021 after a decorated career spanning over 250 matches, now faces serious fraud-related charges. Merrin was taken to the Lake Illawarra police station before being granted conditional bail. He is scheduled to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on December 3.
Merrin has described himself on LinkedIn as a “cryptocurrency enthusiast and dedicated investor,” and has not yet publicly commented on the allegations.
Police say investigations into the case remain ongoing.
⚠️ Note
The charges are still before the court, and Merrin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
