Coming off a strong bounce-back victory in Matchweek 30–31 of the 2026 season, Wolverhampton Wanderers skipper João Gomes sat down to discuss how the club is adapting to its evolving squad dynamics—particularly with the arrival of high-profile additions such as Daly Cherry-Evans and Reece Robson.
The conversation around Wolverhampton this season has been dominated by the so-called “New Wolves” era, a refreshed identity shaped by experienced recruits and a shifting tactical structure. For Gomes, the changes have not been a burden—but rather an opportunity to grow as a leader within a more balanced system.
“It’s been refreshing, to be honest,” Gomes explained. “Bringing in a guy like Daly—someone who has won it all and knows how to lead a team—it takes a bit of the tactical weight off my shoulders.”
The influence of Cherry-Evans, widely regarded for his leadership and game management, has been particularly significant in stabilizing Wolves’ midfield and guiding in-game decision-making. His presence allows Gomes to focus more on his natural strengths—energy, ball progression, and defensive coverage—rather than shouldering the entirety of organizational duties.
Equally impactful has been the addition of Reece Robson, whose service from dummy-half has introduced a new level of tempo and precision to the side’s attacking structure.
“And Reece brings a level of service out of dummy-half that just makes my job easier,” Gomes added. “It speeds everything up and allows us to play more direct when we need to.”
The synergy between the trio has begun to show on the pitch, with Wolves demonstrating improved cohesion, quicker transitions, and more fluid attacking sequences in recent fixtures. The bounce-back win heading into this phase of the season is seen internally as a sign that the team is beginning to settle into its revamped identity.
While external narratives continue to focus on the transformation of the squad, Gomes remains grounded in his role as captain—balancing leadership with adaptability.
“People talk about it being a new era, and that’s fair,” he said. “But for us, it’s about consistency now. We’ve got the quality, we’ve got the leadership, and it’s about putting it all together week by week.”
As Wolverhampton head deeper into the final stretch of the season, the combination of experience, leadership, and tactical flexibility could prove decisive in determining how far this “New Wolves” project can go. For Gomes, the mission is clear: guide the team forward, embrace the support around him, and turn potential into sustained success.
