The 32-year-old hooker, who has been a key player for the Broncos and the Australian national team, was tested positive for a peptide hormone, specifically Human Growth Hormone (HGH), during a routine doping test conducted by the NRL in January.
According to sources, the NRL’s anti-doping tribunal has upheld the decision to ban Briggingshaw for 3 years, citing the severity of the offense and the need to maintain a clean and fair competition.
“I’m devastated by the decision, but I accept it,” Briggingshaw said in a statement. “I made a mistake, and I will take responsibility for it. I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, and fans for letting them down.”
The ban means Briggingshaw will miss the entire 2023 and 2024 NRL Women’s seasons, as well as the 2023 Women’s World Cup. She will be eligible to return to competition in 2026.
The Broncos will look to replace Briggingshaw in their lineup, with young gun Lauren Moss expected to step into the hooker role. Moss, a talented young player from Queensland, has been impressing in the Broncos’ development squad and is seen as a strong contender for the top spot.
“Lauren is a great young player with a lot of potential,” said Broncos coach, Scott Prince. “She’s worked hard and is ready for this opportunity. We’ll support her and the rest of the team as we move forward without Ali.”
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the rugby league community, with fans and teammates alike expressing their shock and disappointment.
“Ali is a true legend of the game, and this is a sad day for everyone involved,” said Australian teammate, Sam Bremner. “We’re going to miss her, but we support her and will be here when she returns.”
The NRL has released a statement condemning doping in all forms and emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a clean and fair competition.
“The NRL has a zero-tolerance policy towards doping, and we will continue to work with our clubs and players to educate them on the dangers of doping and the importance of maintaining a clean and fair competition,” said NRL CEO, Andrew Abdo.
The ban is a major blow to the Broncos and Australian rugby league, and it remains to be seen how Briggingshaw will respond to the setback.
